BLM Expunges More Enemies

Science is the Latest Cultural Construct in the BLM Crusade

If the past few months have informed us of anything, it’s the ominous realization that the neo-Marxist, Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement - with the violent winds characteristic of a cultural and political hurricane - will stop at nothing to expunge from stable, Westernized democracies every Christian institution and tradition that made civil society possible. Hardly a “civil liberties” body, a brief perusal of their website reveals a powerful and remarkably well-funded organization unapologetically Marxist to its core, harboring fierce dedication to undermine any cultural construct smacking of “Western,” roots (even if said constructs are responsible for furthering liberty, economic opportunity, and advanced technology). 

With the stereotypical intolerance expressed by Marxist movements of the past, news headlines in recent months have splashed images of the toppling of statues, defacing of monuments, and burning of churches and Bibles, as a means of “peaceful” protesting by BLM activists. What is less well-known is the malevolent ambition of BLM to inculcate their racist propaganda in churches, schools, national sports, and now museums of natural history. This all done in the name of advancing social justice (who after all could argue against that?), but really with the aim to “cancel” Western culture.

Case in point: the seemingly knee-jerk reaction of London’s own Natural History Museum to an academic paper claiming that “science, racism, and colonial power were inherently intertwined.” Their solution? In what appears to be an odd case of self-inflicted cancel culture yielding its merciless unrelenting sword with the precision of an ax as opposed to a scalpel, historical exhibits from the collections of Darwin and others will undergo “rethinking,” by museum staff, using the rubric for “fairness,” “equity,” and “diversity,” no doubt generously provided by the alleged benevolent civil liberties organization.  

One of these exhibits involves the exotic birds Darwin gathered during his expedition to the Galapagos Islands on the HMS Beagle in 1835. How could the young naturalist know that this fateful voyage would suffer the condemnation of the 21^st century enlightened cultural left as one carried out by the uniquely evil empire of Great Britain for the express purpose of domination? The rationale for the condemnation of the exhibit lies in the reasoning that since the aim of the voyage was nefarious, then certainly the fruits of it (the artifacts collected), should be viewed with certain contempt.

Darwin’s not the only one under BLM scrutiny. Remember Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish naturalist credited with giving us the binomial nomenclature system of naming living organisms? A posthumous woke inquisition has similarly branded him in shame - social justice warrior credentials lacking - since he opined that Africans were “crafty,” “indolent,” and “negligent.” While his views concerning Africans were certainly uninformed – it does not mean his achievements as a great scientist should be undermined. Is it not an unfair exercise to grade an 18^th century northern European by a 21^st century woke rubric? What’s worse, a rubric that changes with the capricious winds of cultural whims.

There are countless other exhibits, statues, memorials, collections, and artifacts that will undergo scrutiny for their links – however distant - to perceived British colonialism as defined by the Black Lives Matter movement, with the aim of removing or renaming such in order to minimize offense to others.

Now curiously, Karl Marx (the darling of BLM founder Patrice Cullors) and collaborator Friedrich Engels, both expressed openly very racist views in both their published writings and letters. Their racist remarks - unfit for writing here, but are linked for review - were directed at Mexican nationals, Africans, and Jews. In spite of these, Marx and Engels seem to have escaped the same inquisition suffered by Darwin, Linnaeus, and countless other scientists on the endangered species list at the London museum.

Perhaps the difference in treatment between the natural philosophers and the political philosophers is that the institution undergirding the work of Darwin and Linnaeus was founded on Judeo-Christian cultural values, whereas that founded by Marx was anything but Christian. Now while Darwin espoused a very materialistic worldview, notwithstanding the institution of science was the product of a worldview that recognized an orderly God, whose creation was knowable and ascertainable.

In addition, recent scientific press concerning issues front and center to BLM has not supported many of their positions – such as the “science” of gender, and the importance of fathers in child-rearing. The science on these matters seems to support a more Biblical view of family and gender. Now if history has told us anything, it is that Marxist movements do not negotiate with dissenting voices – they instead marginalize them, isolate them, and then annihilate them.

Early on, when the monuments of confederate generals were toppled, no one could have imagined that the BLM mob would eventually charge its throng to destroy the monuments of our very founders in a continued effort to overthrow our constitutional republic. The unrelenting and tireless cultural left will not be satiated with the removal or renaming of but a few “offensive” exhibits at the Natural History Museum. Because opinions informed by science get in the way of those held by BLM with respect to notions concerning gender, family, culture, and economics, in typical Marxist form it will not stop until the institution of science itself is neutered.
